I found a great post by Alex Krupp about assumption-based entrepreneurship. In it he basically argues that while solving a problem based on theories about the future is fine for investors, who have the luxury of choosing between multiple solutions to a problem, this strategy may not work as well for entrepreneurs. In others words, it’s often, it’s a lot easier for second movers than for those who are first to the market. First movers have to go through the trouble of convincing the public that there is a problem, and that they need a solution, and that the solution they need is yours.
Alex Krupp argues that instead of predicting the future, entrepreneurs should try to make assumptions about human nature. How true
. An, in our current society, and in all of entrepreneurship, the most important assumption about human nature marketers make is that the general public has unsolved problems. They just don’t know about them yet, and, if you’re a marketer, it’s your job to enlighten them about the problems in their lives. Just as it is the goal of advertisements to convince us to want things we don’t really need, it is often to goal of web applications to convince us to use services we may not have realized we needed, even if the convincing is done subconsciously.
Aspiring entrepreneurs thinking of product ideas are often told “Think of a problem you have right now, and develop a solution”. It seems obvious- solve a problem a lot of people have, and you will have a solution. But the problem is that we, in out comfortable modern lives, don’t really have all that many problems. We may want to do things faster, easier, better, but, really, there are no problems we currently have which don’t have at least a few solutions, however imperfect they may be.
Therefore, the only way to be the first mover in a market is create a few problems. Or, maybe, enlighten the people about their problems and watch those problems become important, like and itch you had forgotten about that suddenly springs to life. Five, ten years ago nobody would have said “one of my biggest concerns right now is that I cannot go to a website and watch Coke shoot out of a guy’s mouth“. Now, if YouTube is down, people will complain quite loudly. A few years ago, people didn’t care about what their friends were doing every second. Now, we can’t live without Facebook.
So what’s the best assumption you can make about human nature as you replace assumptions about the future with assumptions about human nature? There are tons of problems out there in the future for you to solve- they just haven’t been invented yet. People change. Their needs desires and wishes change. It’s tough to predict what those needs will be in the future unless you are the one creating them. Assume that people want to use your application, but they just don’t know it yet. Educate them.
Alternate answer: As Scott Adams writes in The Dilbert Future, people will always have three traits: They will be stupid, selfish, and horny. That assumption works well too.
coke out of a guys mouth: stupid
facebook: selfish + horny
